I was inspired by Lara (https://twitter.com/LaraMathcalf) to create norms for Breakout rooms on Zoom, especially to bring people into the conversation. I definitely felt this specific norm because in meetings, I have a lot to say but it’s awkward because unless you get in half a second after someone is done talking, you’ll feel like you’ll never get a chance to talk, so I end up not talking for a full hour.
Here are the preliminary norms for my students this upcoming semester:
These are preliminary norms so we will go through the first day’s discussions with these norms and then students can amend later. I’m not sure if students even had experience with breakout sessions yet so we will see if these are good after a session or two and then revise if needed.
Let me know if you use these breakout group norms! Thanks for reading!
